Intercultural Awareness

In everything I do, I try to be aware of the many perspectives that surround me.  It involves looking at the other side of the argument and having empathy for another’s situation.  I think that we learn a lot about empathy through the study of music.  As a choir director, I am constantly trying to represent the many different perspectives and cultures in my programming.  One concert that I am particularly proud of, was a winter concert that featured music celebrating the many cultural observances around the time of winter solstice.  The choristers learned a little something about celebrations other than Christmas and even learned some different languages.   The audiences enjoyed the variety of music as well.

Collaboration & Teamwork

From the time I was five until I was 19, I played softball.  This experience of being on a team helped me to develop skills in communication and collaboration.  It was not always easy but the memories I have of working with my teammates to make plays and win games are some of the best memories I have of growing up.

The skill I learned playing ball have helped me to become the leader of a team that produces opera in Prince George.  As the Artistic Producer of Fraser Lyric Opera, I have learned that it is crucial to ask for help and lean on others to get the job done.  Many hands make light work.  The more knowledge and experience one can surround themselves with, the more enjoyable and rewarding a project can be.

Creativity/Innovation

As a performer of opera and music I am constantly being challenged to come up with creative ways to tell my story.  We all have a unique story to tell and it is through my training as a musician that I have learned these communication skills that help me to be an engaging performer.
